Edlyn Watabayashi – Body / Movement Instructor, Weapons Choreographer / Tech
Edlyn Fernandez Watabayashi was born and raised in California and moved to Hawaii in 2001. Her twirling career began in 1991 when she was in middle school. She has spun for the James Logan high School in Union City, CA and has continued on to spin for the famed blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps from Concord, CA.
Also an expert in dance, Ms. Fernandez Watabayashi has performed for the San Jose State Marching Band Spartan Spectrum Danceline as well as the University of Hawaii Marching Band.
As an instructor, she has also taught for Punahou Schools, Kaikalino Winterguard, and Kamehameha Schools. She came in board with Maui High School in 2008.
Ryan Yamamoto – Weapons Choreographer / Tech
Ryan Yamamoto is a graduate of Mililani High School where he began spinning with the school’s winterguard his Freshman year. He then joined the marching band’s colorguard, eventually serving as captain for the rifle line, and then the entire colorguard. Ryan’s competitive drive led him to the Hula Bowl All-Star Marching Band as the state’s top-ranked rifle for two years. He then continued on to the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he again served as rifle captain. After stepping away from the activity to focus on his career, he returned to help the Pearl City High School Colorguard reinvent itself. He also worked with Team New Era Winterguard, Kaikalino Winterguard, and Kamehameha before arriving at Maui High School. Ryan is humbled to be working alongside an incredibly talented and diverse group of clinicians.
Liz Takamori – Tech
Liz Takamori is a Guard Clinician from Hālawa, Oʻahu. She has been in and around marching band since 1999 starting with the Kamehameha Schools Band and Colorguard, and has been with the Maui High Band and Colorguard since 2008. Outside of the marching band world, Liz is a Project Director for PAʻI Foundation (a non-profit based out of Honolulu), and a hula dancer for Pua Aliʻi ʻIlima (under Kumu Hula Vicky Holt Takamine).
Robert King – Consultant
Robert King is a graduate of Saint Louis High School where he was the Drum Major of his marching band. Robert had to learn how to spin his mace and often learned spinning techniques with the Colorguard thus beginning his interest in the activity.
Robert continued on to the University of Hawaii where he was a member of the front ensemble for 2 years before making the switch to the University of Hawaii Colorguard. In the Summer he spent the summer marching with the 2-time DCI World Champion Madison Scouts.
When he returned to Hawaii he began to work with various schools such as Saint Louis High School, Iolani School, University of Hawaii, Kamehameha School, and finally Maui High School. He has become a known clinician and adjudicator in the Colorguard world of Hawaii and has run clinics on behalf of the University of Hawaii for visiting schools from the mainland.
Robert has also created and formed the first Independent Winterguard under Team New Era Winterguard and Kaikalino Winterguard giving students from various schools a chance to perform during the spring semester and keep in shape.
Under his various programs his students have gone on to excel in the Colorguard world marching with Drum and Bugle Corps groups like the Sacramento Mandarins, Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets, Santa Clara Vanguard, Blue Stars, Bluecoats, The Blue Devils, and The Phantom Regiment.
